The Sansevieria or Snake Plant has a rich history that stretches back for centuries.

Originating in the tropical regions of West Africa, Snake plants were believed to have protective and cleansing properties, so they were placed near entrances or used as boundary markers. Their leaves were used for fibre production to make ropes, baskets and other woven items.

They have a unique foliage with long, stiff leaves that grow vertically into points. We find it amusing that this lovely plant also has been called the “Mother-in-law’s Tongue”!

Anyway, moving on…Snake plants are much in demand these days because of their air-purifying qualities, low-maintenance nature and aesthetic appearance. They are recognized for their ability to filter toxins from the air, making them suitable choices for improving indoor air quality.

Caring for Snake plants, also known as Sansevieria or Mother-in-law's Tongue, is relatively easy as they are hardy and low-maintenance plants. Here are some tips for caring for Snake plants:

Snake plants can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from low light to bright indirect light. However, they tend to thrive best in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as it can scorch their leaves.

Snake plants are not very demanding when it comes to humidity and can adapt to normal household humidity levels.
Watering

Snake plants are drought-tolerant and prefer to be slightly underwatered than overwatered. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Water the plant thoroughly and then let the excess water drain away. It's better to err on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering, as snake plants are prone to root rot if the soil remains too wet.

Snake plants can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but they prefer average room temperatures between 15°C and 29°C.

Prune any yellow or dead leaves by cutting them off at the base using clean pruning shears. This helps keep the plant neat and healthy.

Snake plants can be propagated easily through division or leaf cuttings. Dividing the plant during repotting is a common method. Allow the cuttings or divided sections to dry out for a day or two before planting them in well-draining soil.
